This reflection is the third in a four-part series that supplements the free\u00a0Advent prayer journal I am offering to email subscribers. You may read part one HERE<\/a>\u00a0and part two HERE<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

Have you ever felt a little lost? Have you ever wondered what your God-given purpose really is?<\/p>\n

A year ago, that\u2019s\u00a0how I was feeling\u2014lost and unsettled\u00a0about my purpose. Then, an amazing opportunity came my way. It was a dream come true, and I was excited! I was going to have the opportunity to pursue my heart\u2019s desire, and I couldn\u2019t wait to dive in.<\/p>\n

But soon afterward, it became quite obvious that the timing was not right. I felt overwhelmed by the monumental task that was in front of me, and anxiety overcame me. Suddenly, I knew this opportunity was not quite right, and God was clearly asking me to\u00a0wait<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At first, I was very disappointed. \u201cWait, Lord? Why? This is my heart\u2019s desire!\u201d But in reality, I was struggling with\u00a0my health. I was worn down and worn thin. And in God\u2019s wisdom, He was telling\u00a0me to\u00a0wait<\/em>, because the\u00a0timing was not right to add one more thing to my plate.<\/p>\n

Even though I was disappointed at this realization, through God\u2019s invitation to wait, I received a profound amount of grace to say no<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor God alone my soul waits in silence.\u201d \u2014Psalm 62:1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I still wondered about my purpose, but\u00a0my heart began to settle into waiting.<\/p>\n

Then, I received my third health diagnosis in one year. On the day of the news, my heart sank. \u201cI just want to feel normal. I just want enough energy to be a good wife, mom, and friend.\u201d I felt sorry for myself, because I couldn\u2019t keep up with everything on my to-do list. I felt discouraged when I fell behind on my deadlines. I tried so hard to live a \u201cnormal\u201d life, but I was running myself ragged.<\/p>\n

As I sat in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, I asked God for an audible message\u2014a message that would clearly tell me what to do. \u201cWhat is your purpose for me, Lord?\u201d As I sat in the silence, gazing at Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, a wave of peace rested upon me. I realized that God already gave me a message and a purpose. And that was to\u00a0wait<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as for me, I will look to the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.\u201d \u2014Micah 7:7<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Often when we think of waiting, we assume it\u00a0is a waste of time. Like the type of waiting that happens in a long checkout line or in traffic. That type of waiting is filled with anxiety, and in that waiting, we look ahead to where we are going. It feels like we are running late, and we wonder what else we could be doing. We want to be anywhere but waiting.<\/p>\n

Waiting in silence for God, however, is a completely different type of waiting. This type of waiting is not meant to be passive or filled with distraction. Rather, this waiting has purpose; it is active. It is a personal invitation from Jesus to come to Him and wait with Him, and therefore it\u00a0offers us a thrill\u00a0of hope.<\/p>\n

When we wait with God and for God, of course we are excited about what we are waiting for. But there is something good, content, and desirable in the waiting itself. We are now waiting with<\/em>\u00a0the Lord. In the silence, in the stillness, He comforts and consoles our weariness. We find peace in our quiet adoration and expression of gratitude. No longer does the waiting seem unbearable, because we are not waiting alone; we are waiting with<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And when we believe to the very depth of our soul that we are no longer alone in our weariness, in our cries, and in our unanswered prayers, hope is born! And the weariness, the sadness, and the suffering have meaning and purpose.<\/p>\n

For my personal waiting, it is clear that God\u2019s invitation to wait is a pathway to slowing down, growing stronger, and restoring hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut those who wait for the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0shall renew their strength,\u00a0<\/span>they shall mount up with wings like eagles, t<\/span>hey shall run and not be weary,\u00a0<\/span>they shall walk and not faint.\u201d \u2014Isaiah 40:31<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During the season of Advent, God calls us to wait in silence and in stillness for the coming of His Son, Jesus. The darkness of night, illuminated by the candlelight from the Advent wreath, helps us to slow down. Following the Jesse Tree tradition of reading the Bible from Creation to Incarnation reminds us of how long the Jewish\u00a0people waited for the Messiah, and yet, all of their stories, everything that happened in the waiting, pointed toward the Savior. The daily Gospel readings encourage us to be active in our waiting, as we make room in our hearts and homes for the King of kings.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdvent is a time of waiting, of expectation, of silence \u2026 In silence we hear so much that is beautiful,\u201d said Dorothy Day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For me, and perhaps for you, waiting will last longer than the Advent season. And that\u2019s okay! God\u2019s invitation to wait gifts us with a closeness and a \u201cbeing with\u201d God that is truly worthwhile. In the waiting, we can pour our hearts out to God. And we can listen to His message of love, mercy, peace, and hope\u2014the message\u00a0we may only hear while\u00a0we wait.<\/p>\n
