It is just an\nordinary night. Although I am young and small, I am learning how to tend sheep.\nI\u2019m even in charge of two small lambs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stars are\nshining brightly, and all is quiet and calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, the\nsheep begin to \u201cbaa\u201d in anticipation of something unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The older boys\ncheck the perimeter, but there is no sign of an intruder. The elders encourage\nus to settle down, and we huddle close together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I gaze again at\nthe bright stars, and they begin to sparkle and dance. A soft glow grows\nbrighter, and I realize I am not the only one in our group to notice. Even the\nsheep are captivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, an angel\nfills the sky. He approaches us, and we fall to our knees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not be\nafraid,\u201c the angel says. \u201cI am bringing you good news of great joy for all\nthe people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The angel tells\nus that a child has been born in Bethlehem, and He has been born for us. He is\nthe Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Has the moment\nwe\u2019ve been waiting for finally arrived? Has our Messiah finally come?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The angel says we\nwill find Him wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s certainly\nnot how I imagined the Messiah coming into the world. And why would God tell\nus, lowly shepherds, such astonishing news?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, more angels\nappear, and the entire sky fills with majesty. They start singing so\nbeautifully. \u201cGlory to God!\u201d Still on my knees, I lift my arms and heart in\npraise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the angels\ndisappear and the sky returns to normal, everyone is silent and still. Then, someone\nstands up and encourages us to go to Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excited beyond\nmeasure, we hastily run. As we near Bethlehem, we follow the brightest star that\nis shining on some caves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon entering one\ncave, I see a donkey, sheep, and chickens. They\u2019re all doing their normal\nanimal thing, but somehow they seem tamer than most animals. It\u2019s like they\u2019re\non their best behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, I notice\nthat the other shepherds are kneeling. Some are bowing. I turn toward the\ndirection they are facing, and right before my eyes is the most beautiful thing\nI\u2019ve ever seen. It is a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother makes\neye contact with me, and smiles. She invites me closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re\nbeautiful,\u201d I tell her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She laughs and\nthanks me. She tells me that her name is Mary, and she introduces me to her husband\nJoseph. He is strong, quiet, and has the kindest eyes. Then, I look down at the\nBaby. He is sleeping so peacefully. Love radiates from Him, and I am pulled\ninto His presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you like\nto hold Him?\u201d Mary asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nod and sit\ndown in the hay. Mary carefully places Him in my arms. I am mesmerized, and I\nhave a hard time looking away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe angel said\nthis is our Savior,\u201d I tell Mary. I also tell her about the angels and how\nglorious they were. She and Joseph tell me about the times when angels visited them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s so small\nand precious. How will He save us?\u201d I wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith God, all\nthings are possible,\u201d Mary assures me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My group starts\nto leave, and I tell Mary that I never want to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod will give\nyou the grace to relive this moment whenever you want, to feel the love of the\nSavior always,\u201d Mary says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I give Jesus back\nto Mary. Then, Mary gives me some straw tied together in a bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe laid His head\non this exact straw, and I want you to have it. I\u2019m so glad you came,\u201d Mary\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you, Mary.\nI love Jesus. I love you and your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHold us close to\nyour heart. You will always be in ours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hug Mary and\nJoseph. I kiss Jesus\u2019 head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I leave the stable, I realize God\u2019s love for me in a new way \u2026 in the face of the Baby Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
