As a Catholic mom, I am grateful for the belief in the communion of saints, the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. On earth, they strived to live holy lives, following God\u2019s will, practicing virtue, and overcoming sin. Now, they are in Heaven, and God has generously given them the opportunity to pray for us\u00a0on earth, who are still striving for our Eternal Home.<\/p>\n

I often teach my children about particular saints, including the saints they are named after and other saints who have invited us into friendship with them.<\/p>\n

In this 31-day series on Dyslexia, I thought I would include a few saints who could be companions for our children, as they endure the challenges that come with Dyslexia. Some of the saints I have chosen are known for having learning difficulties of their own. Others are famous for their bravery in overcoming great obstacles. Perhaps along the way, you have discovered your own heavenly companions to journey with your family. If you have, please be sure to share your saintly friends with us in the comments.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s saint is St. Joseph of Cupertino. Born in 1603, Joseph endured severe learning disabilities. He was perceived\u00a0as absent-minded and forgetful. Nevertheless, from an early age, he was very prayerful, pious, and obedient.<\/p>\n

Joseph desired to become a priest, but his lack of literacy was a stumbling block. He entered a friary near Cupertino and worked as a stable boy. His cheerful holiness won over his superiors, who eventually received him as a candidate for the priesthood.<\/p>\n

His seminary studies proved to be difficult for him. He endured, and he became a priest. As a priest, Joseph worked miracles, including levitation while offering Mass. He died on September 18, 1663 and was canonized a saint in 1767.<\/p>\n

St. Joseph of Cupertino is often known as the flying priest, but his amazing accomplishments despite his challenges in school make him a faithful intercessor for those with Dyslexia or any learning disability.<\/p>\n

Prayer Before an Exam<\/strong><\/p>\n

O holy Joseph of Cupertino, who loves to bestow your favors upon all in need of your assistance, I implore your help with my studies and upcoming examinations. Despite my hard work and good will, I am anxious about these tests, and how I will perform.<\/em><\/p>\n

Remember, Saint Joseph, that you too endured a similar difficulty and that through obedience and the powerful protection of your spiritual father, you were providentially helped toward your calling and vocation.\u2028Remember that you found yourself in the same difficulty and that through obedience and the powerful protection of your spiritual father you came out providentially well.<\/em><\/p>\n

I beg your assistance now; help me to be confident in my testing, and prompt and alert in all of my answers. I ask your prayers for my intention, in the name of Jesus, and also with a special supplication to Mary and Saint Francis, your Holy Father.\u2028O patron saint of academic examinations, I am convinced that my hope in your prayerful assistance will not be disappointed. Amen.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
