Over the last\nthree Sundays of December, we have heard the promises of Christ\u2019s coming. We\nhave been encouraged to \u201cnot become drowsy from \u2026 the anxieties of daily life\u201d\n(Luke 21:34). We have been invited to \u201cprepare the way of the Lord\u201d (Luke 3:4).\nAnd when we asked, \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d (Luke 3:10), we were told of the Messiah\nand all He would do for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, on this\nfourth Sunday of Advent, we hear, \u201cBlessed are you who believed that what was\nspoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled\u201d (Luke 1:45).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s\nGospel, we enter the sweet encounter between Mary and Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary and Elizabeth Said Yes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prior to this, Mary\nwas visited by Angel Gabriel, and she believed all that he told her \u2026 She\nbelieved that what was spoken to her by the Lord\u2014not only at the Annunciation\nbut throughout Salvation History\u2014would be fulfilled. She knew nothing was impossible\nfor God. And with incredible faith, Mary said yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise,\nElizabeth also believed. The wife of a priest, she knew her Scripture and her people\u2019s\nhistory. And at the moment she greeted Mary at her door, her son\u2014a miracle in\nand of himself\u2014joyfully leaped in her womb. Yes, she also knew nothing was\nimpossible for God. With incredible faith, she also said yes to God\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now It’s Our Turn<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And now, dear\nsisters, we are invited to be counted among the blessed. We have heard the Lord\u2019s\npromises, and now it\u2019s time for us to believe. It\u2019s time to receive what we\u2019ve\nbeen anticipating, to rejoice in the long-awaited gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we ready to\nbelieve? Are we ready to enter into the miracle? Are we ready to say yes to all\nthat is possible for God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps our\nanswer to these questions is no<\/em>.\nPerhaps we don\u2019t feel ready to believe and to say yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, maybe we\nare wrapped up in a long Christmas to-do list, and we feel too busy to be\nready. Maybe we\u2019re just too tired of the busyness, and life feels too\noverwhelming and hectic to enter into the miracle. Or maybe we\u2019re waiting for a\njob offer, test results, our next paycheck, or a child to return to the Church,\nand we wonder how we can possibly be ready to trust the impossible to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Life’s Not Calm or Bright<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It is hard to\nbelieve when life is not calm and bright. When life isn\u2019t going smoothly. When\nwe feel overwhelmed and burdened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But my guess is\nthat all was not calm and bright for Mary and Elizabeth either. Yes, they were\nwomen of great faith, but when God invited them into His plan, their plans were\ncompletely turned upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary faced the\npossibility of divorce and scandal. Little did she know that she would face\nimmense suffering, especially at the foot of the cross. Elizabeth faced gossip\nand misunderstanding. How could a woman of her age be pregnant?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe Mary and\nElizabeth did not feel so ready either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they chose to\ntrust and believe all that the Lord had spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so can we.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus came down\nto earth at Christmas to dwell among us, to walk with us amid suffering, pain,\nand sadness. He came so the weary world could experience the thrill of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don\u2019t need to feel<\/em> ready to be ready. We can believe\nand say yes<\/em>, just as we are\u2014imperfect,\nbroken, weary and fragile\u2014trusting it all to God\u2019s promising word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lantern is\nshining in the stable, welcoming us into the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ready or not,\nhere we come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
